This woman might take the idea of exercise for stress-hardiness to the extreme – 2 different workout classes a day anyone??
However, the basic idea makes sense. Studies have found a direct link between exercise and mental well-being. In fact, this study found that when people exercise more, they become not just physically but also emotionally stronger which allows them to deal with crisis better. This summary of several studies mentions the specific benefits of exercise for mental well-being including reduced anxiety, depression, increased positive self-esteem, and restful sleep.
In a previous blog entry, I mentioned additional ways that help to deal with crisis more effectively such as conscious breathing, eating, and sleeping. In order to reenergize, make powerful in-the-moment decisions, and deal with crisis effectively, it is important to start connecting with yourself, become aware of your level of energy, and your current needs, and strengthen yourself in two ways: emotionally and physically.
Our physical and mental well-being are intimately connected and directly influence our performance. However, how much do we connect our personal well-being with our ability to lead our lives and our businesses effectively? Centered Leadership begins with yourself: When you are connected and centered in yourself, you can draw from a higher level of energy. Based on such a foundation you will be able to reach out and lead powerfully from the inside-out.
