Many industries struggle these days and as a result business owners and employees alike are faced with the need to reinvent their careers and their businesses.

Before you start making dramatic changes to your business or career however, take a breath and center yourself first by addressing the following 3 points:

1. Stay Authentic

Before you change your direction make sure that the indented changes are authentic to you as a person and to your brand. Making your decision for a new direction solely on a rational basis, on “what makes sense” bares the risk of missing some important insights that you can gain when you tune into your gut-feel. Ask yourself:

  • What are your skills and capabilities?
  • What do you stand for personally?
  • What is your professional purpose?
  • How does your professional purpose connect with you personally?

If your changes are too dramatic and if you don’t connect with the new direction emotionally, chances are that the disconnect will be visible to others, too. It will make you appear unauthentic and your business/career will ultimately suffer the consequences. Also, if you don’t feel emotionally connected and passionate about your approach chances are you will run out of steam quickly.

2. Be Purposeful

Only because you have identified a possible new niche,  a potential new market-need doesn’t guarantee that the direction is purposeful and meaningful.

  • What are you trying to achieve?
  • What are your reasons for going this direction? Emotionally? Rationally?
  • How is the new direction valuable to yourself? To your potential new customers?

3. Set Your Goals Effectively

Studies show that using effective goal-setting techniques double your chances to succeed! Set your new goals with care:

Reinventing your career and business starts with tuning into yourself. Center yourself first to initiate changes that are purposeful and authentic, and have the impact you are looking for.
