How to become an initiator, a leader, and a follower – the importance of guy #3

by frauke on June 11, 2009

Here is wonderful and amusing video shared by Seth Godin on his website. As he remarks so truthfully: The person who initiates a movement is not automatically a leader. As Seth pointed out: It was only when guy #3 joined the group that it truly became a “movement”. Before that, it was just one crazy lonely guy dancing by himself, then followed by maybe another crazy guy.

When guy #3 joined it became a movement, and guy #1 became a leader. Every leader needs a support system; others who will join the movement to make it a meaningful endeavor. As much there is to be said about the importance of having a good leader, it is easy to forget that in order become a good leader a group of people is needed who carry out the leader’s ideas and initiate a movement.

Seth concludes: “Initiators are rare indeed, but it’s scary to be the leader. Guy #3 is rare too, but it’s a lot less scary and just as important. Guy #49 is irrelevant. No bravery points for being part of the mob. .. We need more guy #3s.”

So true!!
