How are you doing?

… such a simple, commonplace conversation starter, asked and answered numerous times a day. Because it is so standard, people typically respond with automatic responses. Most of us create a pattern and pretty much respond the same way every time. I wonder: How much is our response a demonstration of our energy? How much does this subconscious energy affect our attitudes? How much is it representative of how we move through life?

Here are three patterns I perceive:

  1. Response: The glass is always half-empty
    • “Hanging in there”
    • “Things could be worse”
    • “Well, not too bad I guess”
  2. Response: No waves, always at even keel
    • “I’m ok”,
    • “Same old, same old”
    • “Fine”
  3. Response: The glass is always half-full
    • “Great”
    • “Fabulous”
    • “Fantastic”

So when people continuously say that they are “hanging in there” – do they literally live their lives by “hanging in there”? When a person is always “ok” or “fine” does that mean that their lives progress at an even keel all the time? No ups, no downs? Where’s the excitement, the LIFE? All those people who always do “great” or “fantastic” – are these people truly excited and happy fellows? Everything is great all the time?

As I started to think about this little conversation staple, part of everyone’s lives, I decided to do a little experiment. Whenever I was asked how I was doing I would now repeat the question silently in my head one more time, giving myself an extra second to become conscious of the actual meaning of this question “So… how AM I doing in this moment?” Wondering how the answer might affect others, and their energy, I thought of an additional question: “How do I want to share my feelings with the other person?”

Taking a breath while going through my two question experiment became a simple yet powerful way to re-focus.  It became a way to bring presence to the moment and consciously choose the energy I want to share others and bring to my environment.
