In this WSJ article Alexandra Levit made some good points to consider before you make the leap into entrepreneurship. Did you know that a recent survey indicates that 61% of Americans have either recently started or thought about starting their own business?
Are you ready to reinvent yourself and start your own venture?
Are you in the right mindset?
Levit suggests that: “Self-employed professionals also are known for being optimistic, competitive, creative and organized. They tend to have a head for business, understand what their customers want and act with integrity. And if they’re passionate about their venture, they work as many hours as it takes to get results.”
Future pace: What will it be like to be an entrepreneur?
Levit proposes to try it on by observing yourself, your skills, passions, preferred way of working, and investigate how entrepreneurs life their entrepreneurial lives: “Observe yourself like a bug and note the situations where you feel most creative and excited,” suggests Ms. Slim. “Hang out with entrepreneurs to see if you like the lifestyle, and go through some of the motions yourself — like approaching a customer or advertising your latest project — to see how it feels.”
I will add the following points:
Be grounded:
Have a guiding frame based on your values and beliefs. Being centered in yourself first will help you to create a clear and strong message, stay within your boundaries, and pick a direction with your business that plays to your strengths. From such a place it will also be easier for you to find the needed resources and support that you may need.
Do you have a purpose?
Purpose will give your action meaning, will motivate you, and become the driver that helps you conquer obstacles, think outside the box, and become an entrepreneur for the long haul. Do you have a clearly defined purpose for yourself to become an entrepreneur? And what is the purpose for the particular business you seek to start?
Set your goals effectively
Read this entry, that entry, and this one. One of the most important things to become successful in entrepreneurship and anything else for that matter is to set your goals carefully, purposefully, and strategically. Do you have a plan for building your business? For dealing with obstacles? Aligning the necessary resources? Support systems?
And of course – remember to BREATHE when things get stressful and overwhelming! The most effective entrepreneurs and leaders know how to become stress-hardy in order to stay on top of their game.
